Aton Forest is holding 2 workshops in September for private land owners and land management professionals

Naturalistic Landscaping Design Workshop on Saturday, September 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with landscape designer and lecturer Larry Weaner is a demonstration of ecologically based naturalistic landscaping and its benefits. With an understanding of natural processes, you will learn how to work with the land to develop an aesthetic and healthy landscape.

 

Distinguishing Invasive Plants and Native Look-A-Likes During the Growing Season on Saturday, September 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with noted field botanist Bill Moorhead focuses on field identification of terrestrial invasive plants in late summer and early fall when leaf and fruit characteristics are most important. Learn to distinguish non-native invasive plants from related native species and look-a-likes.

Distinguishing Invasive Plants and Native Look-A-Likes on September 24

This workshop, led by Field Botanist William Moorhead, focuses on identification of terrestrial invasive plants in late summer and early fall when leaf and fruit characteristics are most important. Learn to distinguish non-native invasive plants from related native species and look-a-likes. Development of field identification skills is emphasized, and most of the day will be spent in the field, following classroom introduction. A number of "watch list" species will also be covered, i.e. species which may become invasive or are invasive but are not yet in our region. The workshop is designed for professionals interested or already involved in invasive plant control, and private land owners interested in managing their properties as natural areas. Participants should bring a 10X hand magnifier, a field notebook and writing implement, bags for collecting specimens, sun block, and appropriate footwear and clothing for hiking and standing outside.

Naturalistic Landscaping Design Workshop on September 17

A Naturalistic Landscaping Design Workshop, led by landscape designer Larry Weaner and executive director of Aton Forest John Anderson, will demonstrate ecologically-based naturalistic landscaping and its benefits. This short course will provide an understanding of how to work with natural processes on your property to develop an attractive and healthy landscape. If weather permits, we will spend time outside observing managed and natural habitats, and there will be time dedicated to discussing participant's land management issues.

 

Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 9 am to 3 pm at Aton Forest Headquarters, 270 North Colebrook Rd. in Norfolk. Cost: $30 (paid in advance); $40 (paid at workshop). Field Identification of Sedges in July

We are hosting a 2 day workshop by botanist William Moorhead on Wednesday and Thursday, July 6 and 7, 2011 entitled "Field Identification of Sedges (Carex) of Northwestern Connecticut." This program will emphasize the ecology and value of these often hard to identify plants, which constitute the most diverse genus of vascular plants in Connecticut.

 

The location is White Memorial Conservation Center, 80 Whitehall Rd., Litchfield, Connecticut 06759. The time is 9:00am to 6:00pm on both days, with an optional lab session on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 10:00pm. Transportation to nearby field sites will be by instructor and participants.

 

The tuition is $225. This cost includes lunch and beverages on both days of the workshop, and use of dormitory facilities and kitchen on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
