A workshop on vernal pools will be led by John Anderson & Mike Aurelia at Aton Forest (270 North Colebrook Road, Norfolk) on Saturday, April 16, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, lunch included. Registration fee is $10. Please RSVP.
This workshop will give participants the knowledge to identify our local amphibians as adults, larvae and eggs in the field and in the classroom, and includes identification of frogs by calls. There will also be instruction on how to locate and identify vernal pools and collect data for inventories and monitoring. It is planned that about half of the day will be spent in the field after an introductory classroom session and lunch. The workshop is designed for people who are interested in amphibians and vernal pool protection, especially those interested in conducting inventories and monitoring vernal pools.
Each participant should bring: a good quality hand lens with about 10X magnification; a field notebook (preferably waterproof) and writing implement[s], his/her choice of sun protection; appropriate foot-ware for wet situations; clothing that allows you to stand around for 5-10 minutes in chilly and/or wet weather conditions in sufficient comfort to concentrate on listening and taking notes.
Payment is required in advance. Checks should be made out to "Aton Forest, Inc." and sent to Aton Forest Inc., P.O. Box 509, Norfolk, CT 06058. Enrollment will be on a first-come-first-served basis, and is limited to 12. The final decision as to whether a workshop will be run will be made as early the minimum number of 6 registrations have been received, or by April 13th, whichever is first. If a session is canceled by us for any reason, registration fee payments will be refunded in full, by mail.
