4/25 - Vernal Pool Identification & Ecology

This workshop will give participants the knowledge to identify our local amphibians as adults, larvae, and eggs in the field and in the classroom.  Identification of these animals will be based on physical characteristics as well as by calls.  Instruction on how to locate and identify vernal pools and collect data for inventories and monitoring will also be covered.

The workshop will consist of an introductory classroom session followed by a trip into the field to observe some vernal pools at Aton Forest.  This workshop is designed for people who are interested in amphibians and vernal pool protection, especially those interested in conducting inventories and monitoring vernal pools.

MIKE AURELIA has been the President of Aton Forest since 2007 and is a Certified Wetlands Scientist.  He has worked with wetland ecosystems for decades including time as Director of the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency for the town of Greenwich, CT.

March 14 - Winter Tree & Shrub Identification

Come learn to identify trees and shrubs in the winter season!  The first part of this course will be indoors focusing on botanical terminology, plant morphology, biology, and ecology.  The second section will be held outdoors with the goal of identifying plants in the field.  This course will be a great refresher for those planning on taking the Invasive Plant Identification workshop on 4/1.

Bring a hand lens if you have one, as well as a notebook and pencil.
Please dress appropriately for weather.

JOHN ANDERSON is the Executive Director of Aton Forest.  Starting in 1981 he worked alongside the eminent ecologist Dr. Frank E. Egler on vegetation science and conservation projects.  He has studied the plants and animals of northwestern Connecticut for over three decades and has given talks and guided walks on a variety of biological and conservation topics.

Nature Journal Workshop Series

Keeping a Nature Journal

If you love nature and artistic creativity, nature journaling is the way to spend time in the natural world, using your visual and literary skills. Botanical and landscape artist Leslie Watkins leads inspiring art workshops on creating and keeping your own personal nature journal. Each journal is as unique as the individual creating it. Participants learn basic art techniques using pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor. Nature lovers of all ages are welcome, from seasoned painters to budding artists. We will meet following the Naturalist's Workshops at Aton Forest, and make our journal entries while the talks are still fresh in our minds.

Pressing plants is a common way to preserve plants for natural history and taxonomic studies. However, the same method can be used to make attractive arrangements, suitable for framing. In this workshop you will learn the techniques of pressing, drying and mounting plants both for you own nature studies and as art. You may bring your own plants to press or mount. Materials will be provided.

JOHN ANDERSON is the Executive Director of Aton Forest and has worked with plants in the region for over 20 years.  He has a vast knowledge of the species within the preserve as well as a strong connection with the land and history of Aton Forest.
